How do you show up on Google Maps in your area?

October 14, 2026 · 3 min read

To show up on Google Maps, you need a complete Google Business Profile. That means the right category, your service area, real photos, regular reviews, and the same business info everywhere online. It's free, and it's one of the most useful things a local business can set up.

Here's how to do it, step by step.

Why the map matters

When someone searches "HVAC repair near me," the map with a few local businesses often shows up near the top. Many people call straight from there and never scroll down.

Google says it ranks local results by three things: how well you match the search, how close you are, and how well-known you are. You can't change distance. But you can work on the other two.

Step 1: Claim and verify your profile

Go to Google Business Profile and search for your business. If it's already there, claim it. If not, create it.

Google will ask you to verify that you own the business. Follow the steps it gives you. Your profile won't fully show until this is done.

Step 2: Pick the right category

Your main category matters a lot. Pick the one that best matches what you do. "Tree service," not just "Contractor." "HVAC contractor," not "Service establishment."

You can add a few extra categories for other services. Don't add ones you don't really do.

Step 3: Fill out everything

  • Service area: The towns you actually serve. If you work from home, you can hide your address.
  • Hours: Keep them accurate, including holidays.
  • Services: List each one in plain words.
  • Description: Say what you do and where, like you'd tell a neighbor.
  • Website and phone: Link to your site and use a number you answer.

Step 4: Add real photos

Post photos of your crew, your trucks, and your work. Before-and-after shots are great. Real photos build trust that stock photos can't. Add new ones every few weeks.

Step 5: Get reviews and reply to them

Reviews help you stand out and show up. Ask every customer after the job, with a direct link. We explain how in how to get more Google reviews.

Step 6: Post updates

Your profile lets you post short updates, like a recent job, a seasonal tip, or a special. They show people your business is active.

You don't need to post every day. A short post every week or two is plenty. Add a photo each time.

Step 7: Keep your info the same everywhere

Your business name, address, and phone should match on your website, Google, Facebook, Yelp, and any other listing. Small differences can confuse Google about who you are.

Your website should also name the towns you serve, with a page for each main service. That helps Google connect your business to the right searches. Learn more on our web design page.
